Description:

Mini Full Metal Mustard is a collaboration between Hajime Sorayama — the Japanese artist whose hyper-realistic paintings of chrome robots and sexualised mechanoids have made him one of the most influential visual artists of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries — and YooBSS, producing a miniature electric shaver rendered entirely in Sorayama's signature chrome aesthetic. The result is an object that occupies the space between industrial design, fine art collectible, and fetish object in the most precise and deliberate sense: a functional tool elevated by its surface treatment and its authorial context into something that demands to be looked at as much as used.

The chrome finish — mirror-polished, reflective, cold to the eye and warm to the touch — is Sorayama's most personal material language. Since the 1970s he has deployed this aesthetic in paintings of female androids and mechanical organisms that blur the boundary between the organic and the manufactured, the erotic and the mechanical, the human and the posthuman. The shaver, in this context, is not a departure from that practice but an extension of it: the same chrome surface, the same fetishisation of industrial finish, applied to an object of intimate daily grooming.
