Description:
LAST (GREAT) DEBATE (2019–2020) is a striking large-format painting by Hebru Brantley, one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary American art. Combining the visual language of street art, comic books, animation and contemporary figurative painting, Brantley has developed a highly recognisable artistic universe in which childhood imagery becomes a vehicle for exploring identity, cultural memory, representation and the meaning of heroism.
The composition brings together a group of stylised, youthful figures, distinguished by oversized protective goggles, vivid green clothing and expressive purple faces. Standing shoulder to shoulder, their arms folded across their chests, the characters create a powerful sense of collective presence. Their almost identical appearance suggests unity, solidarity and shared identity, while their individual expressions and positioning introduce subtle variations within the group.
The title, LAST (GREAT) DEBATE, invites reflection on the relationship between collective identity, opposing perspectives and the possibility of dialogue. The juxtaposition of youthful protagonists with a title suggesting confrontation and intellectual exchange creates an intriguing tension between innocence and complexity. Rather than offering a definitive interpretation, Brantley leaves the viewer to consider the meaning of the gathering and the questions it raises.
This visual language is central to Brantley's wider practice. Drawing inspiration from African American history, graffiti, comic books, Japanese anime and popular culture, the artist constructs narrative-driven worlds populated by fictional characters. His work frequently challenges conventional representations of the hero, placing young Black protagonists at the centre of imaginative universes traditionally dominated by other cultural narratives.
Through his distinctive combination of bold colours, graphic outlines and cartoon-inspired figures, Brantley creates imagery that is immediately accessible while carrying broader reflections on power, identity, nostalgia and hope. His practice is closely associated with Afrofuturism, reimagining familiar visual codes to create alternative narratives and new possibilities for cultural representation.
The present work was exhibited at NANZUKA, Tokyo, as part of Mythos Opus Pt. 3, held from October 26 to November 13, 2021. Its provenance from NANZUKA, one of Tokyo's established contemporary art galleries, further situates the painting within Brantley's international exhibition history.
Executed in mixed media and acrylic on canvas, LAST (GREAT) DEBATE measures 122 × 91.4 cm. The work is signed, titled and dated on the reverse and is reported to be in good condition.
