Description :
White Shadow (2023) is an archival pigment print produced for the 60th Anniversary Editions of MoMAK — the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto — in a strict edition of 60, signed and numbered by the artist in pencil at lower right.
Two irregular white polygonal forms lie against a ground of dense black spray — the black radiating outward from behind each shape in a soft, luminous halo, the white of the forms themselves untouched. The title is precise: these are shadows cast not by darkness but by light, or rather by the absence of black — the shape defined entirely by what surrounds it rather than by what it contains. The spray disperses at the edges into individual particles of pigment, so the boundary between form and ground is never a line but a gradient, a zone of uncertainty where white and black negotiate their territory.
Imai Norio works at the intersection of concrete art, process-based practice, and the material investigation that defined the Japanese avant-garde from the 1970s onward. His practice is built on simple, verifiable operations — the application of spray to paper or canvas, the placement of a form, the documentation of a physical event — in which the resulting image is never composed so much as produced. The spray obeys physics; the white shapes obey geometry; the work is what happens between them.
White Shadow distils this logic into a single image of considerable formal power. The composition is asymmetric — two shapes at oblique angles, the black field heavier behind one than the other — and yet entirely resolved. It is a work that rewards sustained looking: what appears as a photographic record of a studio process reveals itself as a precisely calibrated study in figure, ground, light and mass.
