Description :
Plate I from Salvador Dalí’s celebrated 1969 Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland portfolio presents the central protagonist of Lewis Carroll’s narrative — Alice herself — in a composition of dreamlike buoyancy and surrealist elegance. A luminous amber-orange figure, rendered in Dalí’s fluid intaglio line, soars upward into the picture plane as if pulled skyward by an invisible force, her dress billowing into a vortex of warm colour. Below, a seated shadow figure watches — grounded, dark, the counterweight to Alice’s airborne liberation. A geometric form floats above, a small flower anchors the lower register, and a bird cuts across the pale sky: a composition of opposites held in perfect Dalínian equilibrium.
The image establishes the visual and psychological tone for the entire portfolio: Carroll’s world of impossible logic and physical impossibility rendered through Dalí’s own equally impossible visual universe, the two dreamers meeting in a space where gravity, proportion, and causality have all been cheerfully suspended. Dalí’s choice to render Alice in warm amber — the only colour in a composition otherwise executed in black and ochre line — makes her simultaneously the most present and the most ethereal element of the image, a figure of pure golden energy in a world of shadows.
