Description :

Plate X is the most joyfully anarchic and chromatically explosive image in the portfolio — a composition organised around Carroll’s Duchess’s baby, which Alice discovers has transformed into a pig. In Dalí’s rendering, the pig becomes a glorious, luminous creature: a pink and amber animal outlined in deep purple, radiating yellow light from its entire body as if the transformation itself is the source of illumination, floating above a bare branching tree whose dark trunk descends through the composition like a spine. Around and below it, the world of Wonderland erupts in full chromatic abandon — blue flower clusters at left, orange and yellow drips cascading from the pig’s radiant body, dark green botanical forms at right, and in the lower register a group of calligraphic figures in dynamic motion, their black line bodies gesturing upward toward the impossible creature above.

Three butterflies — a red one, a blue-and-black one, and a large yellow patterned one — hover in the upper register with the precision of entomological specimens, their natural exactitude a deliberate counterpoint to the surrealist impossibility of the glowing airborne pig below. At upper left, a black calligraphic figure twirls a hoop — one of Dalí’s recurring peripheral presences, the small human gesture that measures the scale of the marvellous. The plate signature appears lower right in the warm, loose hand that distinguishes Dalí’s more energetic compositions.
