Description :

Plate XI is one of the most formally spare and most atmospherically powerful images in the portfolio — a composition of extraordinary economy in which a single creature dominates the picture plane with complete authority. The Mock Turtle — Carroll’s melancholy, perpetually weeping character whose name is a pun on the mock turtle soup fashionable in Victorian England — is rendered by Dalí as a creature of genuinely strange beauty: its shell a mosaic of deep teal, amber, rust, and gold, glowing with an internal warmth against the deep blue-grey wash that pools around and beneath it. The turtle’s head, turned in profile, has the beaked, eagle-like quality of Dalí’s most chimeric animal transformations — part reptile, part raptor, entirely impossible.

Above, in the pale upper register, two calligraphic presences inhabit opposite corners: at upper left, a minimal black figure — the familiar loop-headed Dalínian presence — leans into motion; at upper right, a golden cross or kite-like form rendered in amber line hovers with the ambiguity of a bird, a toy, or a sign. Below the turtle, the blue-grey wash dissolves into the white paper in the liquid, atmospheric way that distinguishes this plate as one of the most painterly in the series. The plate signature — large, loose, confident — sits lower centre, Dalí’s most expansive self-annotation in the portfolio.
