Pumpkin (Light/Blue) (2011) presents Yayoi Kusama's most iconic subject — the pumpkin — in its most essential form: stripped of colour, reduced to black and white, the polka-dot patterning that covers every surface rendered in the stark contrast of ink and paper. The pumpkin is Kusama's most personal motif, rooted in childhood memories of the vegetables growing in her family's seed nursery in Matsumoto, Nagano — a humble agricultural subject that she has elevated, over the course of seven decades, into one of the most recognisable images in contemporary art. In yellow and black it glows; in black and white it reveals its formal logic most clearly: the obsessive dot pattern, the bulbous segmented form, the flat graphic outline that contains and liberates simultaneously.

The dot is never merely decorative in Kusama's practice. It is the visual expression of her psychological experience — the hallucinations that began in childhood, in which flowers spoke to her, dots multiplied across every surface, and the boundary between herself and the world dissolved. Art-making, for Kusama, has always been a form of self-therapy: the act of covering a surface with dots externalises the internal, fixes the hallucination on paper, and in doing so provides relief from its pressure. The pumpkin covered in dots is therefore simultaneously a vegetable, a self-portrait, a symptom, and a cure.
