Artist: Yayoi Kusama (b. 1929)
Medium: Screenprint
Dimensions: 45 × 53.5 cm
Edition: 100
Signature: Signed lower right
Description:
The Yangtze River (1990) is a vivid and formally exuberant screenprint from one of the most consequential artists of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries — a landscape of explosive chromatic intensity in which Yayoi Kusama's singular visual imagination transforms one of Asia's great rivers into something between hallucination and celebration. Jagged mountain forms in magenta, yellow, green, and crimson rise against a gold-patterned sky, their silhouettes dense and compressed; below, the river moves in white-dotted waves — the dots, Kusama's most personal and obsessive mark, appearing here as water, as foam, as the repetitive pulse that runs through her entire practice.
The composition is characteristic of Kusama's approach to landscape: nature not observed but reimagined, its forms subjected to a chromatic intensity that pushes representation toward abstraction without abandoning it entirely. The gold sky — rendered in a geometric net pattern recalling both Japanese decorative tradition and Kusama's own infinity net paintings — anchors the image in a visual culture that spans East and West, the personal and the universal.
Produced in 1990 — a pivotal decade for Kusama, who was consolidating her international reputation after years of underrecognition — and limited to an edition of 100, this screenprint is signed by the artist in the lower right margin. Kusama's work has achieved extraordinary results at auction, with paintings and sculptures regularly reaching seven and eight figures; her prints, produced in relatively small editions, are among the most actively sought in the contemporary market. A rare opportunity to acquire a signed work from her mature period.

Is this an original Yayoi Kusama print? Yes — an original screenprint in colours, hand-signed by the artist lower right, from an edition of 100.
What is the edition size? Limited to 100 impressions — a relatively small edition for a work of this period.
What is the significance of the dots in this work? The dot motif — here rendered as white circles on the river's surface — is Kusama's most personal and enduring mark, rooted in childhood visual experiences she has described as hallucinations. The dot appears across her entire body of work as a symbol of infinity, repetition, and self-obliteration.
