Description:

Rainbow (Mask Series 1997 No. 8) is one of the most celebrated and most historically significant images in contemporary Chinese art — a work that encapsulates an entire era of social transformation in a single, unforgettable composition. Five men in Western suits stand arm in arm beneath a blazing rainbow arc on a turquoise ground, their faces blank, expressionless masks beneath which mouths hang open — laughing, crying, or simply existing in a state that resists easy categorisation. Blood-red streaks mark their hands and faces. The rainbow above them is the most cheerful possible backdrop for a group portrait of profound collective alienation.

Zeng Fanzhi began his Mask Series after relocating from Wuhan to Beijing in the early 1990s — a period of disorienting social and economic transformation in China, when the rapid Westernisation of urban life was producing entirely new social codes, new hierarchies, and new forms of loneliness. The masks his figures wear are not disguises but revelations: the blank face as the only honest response to a world that demands performance, the open mouth that cannot speak, the gesture of solidarity — arms draped, bodies pressed together — that communicates nothing. “I felt deeply connected to the collision between people’s fervent pursuit of well-being and their inner struggle,” Fanzhi has said.

The original painting — 179.1 × 199.5 cm, now held in the M+ Sigg Collection in Hong Kong — is one of the foundational works of Chinese contemporary art. This 22-colour silkscreen, printed on 600gsm Somerset Tub Sized paper with the weight and surface quality of a museum production, translates the image’s chromatic intensity and graphic precision with exceptional fidelity. Signed by the artist and individually numbered from an edition of 300, with certificate of authenticity.
