Banksy's Soup Can is an obvious nod to Andy Warhol's famous series of Campbell's soup can paintings from 1962, which were later reproduced as prints. In contrast to Warhol's homage to the endlessly reproduced images of consumer society, Banksy's Soup Can offers a scathing critique of the supermarket giant that has taken over the contemporary market.
The print shows cans of soup of the same flavour - as opposed to Warhol's range of flavours - showing the harsh reality and monotony of surviving on a tight budget. It evokes the vintage aesthetic that supermarkets such as Tesco now use to sell British produce.
