Description of the work:
Cui Jie constructs a futuristic vision of China's rapid urbanization. The sun hangs low over the Shanghai Federation of Industry and Commerce building, drawing on the artist’s experiences growing up in the city. Multiple perspectives collide on a single plane, showing glimpses of what lies beyond the building’s current façade. The screen print synthesizes a range of aesthetics—from Bauhaus to Soviet propaganda to urban futurism. Using colored pencils, Cui adds hand-drawn birds to each print. His softly hued birds adorn the surface in contrast to the gleaming metals of the architecture.
