Work of the month: "Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Pencil, and a Blue Wash" by David Hockney
"Lithographic Water Made of Lines, Pencil, and a Blue Wash" David Hockney's is a fascinating work in which graphic rigor is placed at the service of the poetry of the everyday. Produced between 1978 and 1980, this lithograph on handmade paper explores how a simple water surface can become a terrain for visual and emotional experimentation. Through a subtle interplay of lines, blue washes, and pencil tracings, Hockney transforms the liquid element into a composition that is both abstract and evocative. The surface seems to vibrate before our eyes, as if each stroke seeks to capture the very essence of movement. This work offers a decomposed and meditative vision of water, where the eye navigates between graphic density and chromatic lightness.
As is often the case with Hockney, technique becomes language: it is not simply a matter of representing, but of reinvent perceptionBy deconstructing the fluidity of water to better reveal its complexity, the artist invites sensitive and sensory contemplation. The image becomes an experience, oscillating between stylized figuration and serene abstraction.
Published by Tyler Graphics Ltd in just 48 copies, signed and dated by the artist, this work is a rare and precious testimony to Hockney's formal research at a key moment in his career.
