Description:

Humbled is a large-format original mixed media relief by Alex Yanes — the Miami-based artist whose hand-cut, layered sculptural paintings occupy a singular position between street art, toy culture, illustration, and fine art. The work is immediately, joyfully commanding: a totem of stacked characters — a grimacing brown-faced figure at the base, a winged teal form above, a smiling cloud entity rising above that — towers within a deep burgundy moulded frame, while cartoon arms extend outward from the sides, one finger raised in a "number one" gesture, the whole composition spilling beyond the frame's edges in a way that collapses the boundary between image, object, and installation.

The word "HUMBLE" is embedded in a pink heart at the apex of the composition — a title that the image complicates with characteristic Yanes wit: the totem is anything but humble in its visual presence, its scale, its exuberance, its demand for attention. The juxtaposition of the word and the work is the joke, and the insight: the aspiration toward humility is itself a kind of pride.
