Kiku (1983) — "chrysanthemum" in Japanese — is one of the most culturally specific and formally elegant works in Andy Warhol's print catalogue, produced for and published by the Gendai Hanga Center in Tokyo in 1983 during a period of intense engagement between Warhol and Japanese culture, collectors, and institutions. The chrysanthemum — Japan's imperial flower, emblem of the Chrysanthemum Throne, symbol of longevity, rejuvenation, and the autumn season in Japanese aesthetics — is subjected to Warhol's signature chromatic transformation: the natural form flattened, the colour made artificial and absolute, the botanical specimen elevated into graphic icon through the same process he had applied to Marilyn Monroe, Mao Zedong, and the electric chair.
