Mao is a screenprint in colours on Beckett High White wove paper, executed in 1972 by Andy Warhol — the defining figure of American Pop Art — signed in ball-point pen and stamp-numbered verso from the edition of 250, printed by Styria Studio, Inc., and co-published by Castelli Graphics and Multiples, Inc., New York, presented as the full sheet and framed, catalogued as Feldman & Schellmann II.95. The work carries a distinguished provenance from Tolarno Galleries in Melbourne, acquired by the present owner directly from the gallery.

Warhol's Mao series was prompted by President Nixon's landmark 1972 visit to China, which placed Mao Zedong's already ubiquitous propaganda portrait at the center of Western media attention. Applying his signature silkscreen process to an image already defined by mass reproduction, Warhol produced one of his most pointed meditations on celebrity, power, and image saturation, linking the cult of a political leader to the same mechanisms of fame he explored through Hollywood stars and consumer products.

At 914 × 914 mm, the square format gives the composition a monumental, confrontational presence. This impression's production history, publication, and Tolarno Galleries provenance give it exceptional documentation and traceability.

That same fascination with mass-reproduced imagery appears in Cow, a color lithograph turning an everyday farmyard subject into a Pop icon. A different, late-career meditation on legacy can be found in Beethoven (1987), a complete set of four screenprints from an edition of 60 — both available now at Lynart Gallery.
