Description:

Miss Flower (2020) is a glazed ceramic sculpture by Chiho Aoshima — the Tokyo-based artist whose digitally generated worlds of ethereal female figures, supernatural landscapes, and dreamlike flora have made her one of the most distinctive voices in the Kaikai Kiki collective that Takashi Murakami founded and which has shaped the trajectory of Japanese contemporary art in the twenty-first century. The work translates Aoshima's characteristic visual universe — delicate, otherworldly, suspended between beauty and melancholy — from the digital screen into the physical world of fired and glazed ceramic, a medium whose weight and materiality provide a deliberate counterpoint to the immateriality of her digital source images.

The figure — Miss Flower — embodies the archetype that recurs across Aoshima's practice: a female presence that is simultaneously human and botanical, individual and universal, rooted in the Japanese tradition of the beautiful spirit who inhabits the natural world while remaining apart from it. The glazed surface — with its capacity for colour depth, reflective sheen, and the subtle variations of the kiln — gives the sculpture a tactile and chromatic richness that screens and prints cannot replicate, the ceramic body holding the image with the permanence and the fragility that the medium uniquely combines.

Executed in 2020 and signed "Chiho" on the side, this work was produced in association with Perrotin Gallery, Hong Kong — one of the most internationally significant contemporary art galleries and Aoshima's primary gallery representative for the Asia-Pacific region. Aoshima's work is held in the collections of major museums worldwide and is actively collected across Asia, Europe, and North America
