Description:

No Gardens Pt. II (2016) presents Brantley's signature female protagonist — Lil Mama, the blue-skinned, goggle-wearing girl who anchors much of his figurative work — in one of her most psychologically complex and visually dense realisations. She sits in three-quarter profile, her pink afro puffs blazing against a black upper ground, her yellow top luminous against the layered background of hand-drawn graphic text and imagery: "DON'T LOOK DOWN," "MILK," fragments of illustrated characters and tag-style lettering that constitute a kind of visual autobiography of Chicago street culture. The goggles — Brantley's most personal motif — rest on her face in their characteristic yellow-and-red frame, the lenses wide and reflective, the gaze absorbed and slightly distant.

Lil Mama is Brantley's most enduring character — a figure who has appeared across his paintings, murals, sculptures, and prints since the mid-2000s as a vehicle for exploring themes of Black girlhood, imagination, resilience, and the complex emotional interior of childhood lived in difficult circumstances. The title — No Gardens Pt. II — evokes the concrete landscape of urban Chicago: a world without the pastoral, without the ease of natural beauty, where imagination must construct its own green spaces from within. The layered background — white with illustrated text and imagery — functions as that imagined space: a world of signs and symbols that the figure inhabits and is constituted by.
