Description

The Bather (2005) is a vibrant and formally assured lithograph from Jim Dine — one of the foundational figures of American Pop Art and Neo-Expressionism, whose career spanning seven decades has produced one of the most diverse and technically accomplished bodies of work in postwar American art. The composition presents a headless female torso rendered in an ascending sequence of bold, flat colour zones — red, yellow, blue, green, orange, purple — against a textured grey background of gestural mark-making that provides visual relief and painterly warmth to the otherwise graphic figure. The body is simultaneously fragmented — headless, limbless — and entirely confident, the stacked colours giving it a totemic, almost sculptural presence.

The image belongs to Dine's long engagement with the human figure as a vehicle for chromatic and formal experimentation — a practice that places him in dialogue with Matisse's cut-outs, de Kooning's women, and the body-as-colour-field works of his Pop Art generation, while remaining entirely his own. The grey background, achieved through the characteristic overworking and re-working that defines Dine's print practice, contrasts with the flat declarative colour of the figure in a way that amplifies both: the textured ground makes the colour sing, and the flat colour makes the ground recede and vibrate simultaneously.

Published by Princess Cruises, California in 2005 — a commission that places this work in the tradition of artist-designed luxury editions while connecting it to the broader culture of print patronage in American art. Dine's work is held in the permanent collections of MoMA, the Whitney, the Tate, and the Pompidou. Signed and numbered from an edition of 200.
