Description :

Time of the Pool CG No. 4-a (1975/2023) is an archival pigment print produced for the 60th Anniversary Editions of MoMAK — the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. It reproduces one of the most striking computer-generated compositions of the Japanese post-war avant-garde: a geometrically precise landscape in which a vanishing-point road recedes toward the horizon between flat planes of green, brown and deep cobalt blue, while a cluster of red-framed windows floats freely through the sky — untethered from architecture, suspended in defiance of gravity and perspective alike.

Kashihara Etsutomu is a pioneering figure in Japanese computer art and graphic design. His Time of the Pool series, developed in the mid-1970s, represents some of the earliest and most rigorous engagement with computer-generated imagery as fine art in Japan. Working with CG tools at a time when such processes were largely confined to scientific and engineering contexts, Kashihara constructed landscapes that combined extreme geometric clarity with a quietly surrealist spatial logic — the floating windows, the miniature house with its red roof, the small truck on an empty road, the aircraft contrail across an impossible sky. The result sits between De Chirico’s metaphysical piazzas, early video game architecture, and the cool spatial experiments of Japanese Constructivism.

The MoMAK edition brings this 1975 composition into 2023 as an archival pigment print in an edition of precisely 60 — one per year of the museum’s history. Signed and numbered on the reverse. At 42.4 × 34.8 cm, the work is intimate but commands attention: its flat planes and saturated palette are engineered to hold a wall.
