Description

SCHNOZEZ (2022) is a large-format archival print by Kenny Scharf — the New York-born artist whose exuberant, psychedelic visual universe emerged from the downtown Manhattan scene of the early 1980s alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring, and whose work has sustained its chromatic energy and its pop-surrealist vocabulary across four decades of continuous production. The image is a close-up, wall-to-wall composition of bulging oval forms — part eye, part nose, part planet, part cartoon organ — rendered in Scharf’s signature palette of hot pink, orange, purple, and violet, the forms layered and interlocked in a dense, pulsating field that fills the picture plane without pause or relief. White starburst flares punctuate the composition, and looping pink coil-lines swirl across the background in the kind of gestural frenzy that recalls both his spray-painted cosmic murals and the visual language of the Saturday morning cartoons he has always openly adored.

The title is pure Scharf: “SCHNOZEZ” — a pluralised, phonetically spelled version of “shnoz,” the slang term for a large nose — transforms an anatomical comedy into the subject of a print of genuine formal intensity. The forms, stripped of their referential context, become purely abstract; restored to their comic origin, they become funny, warm, and deliberately ridiculous. Scharf has always understood that the ridiculous and the sublime are not mutually exclusive — that a painting can be joyful and serious simultaneously, that Pop Art’s debt to consumer culture and cartoon imagery is not a limitation but a resource.

Printed on 290gsm Cotton Entrada Rag — a heavyweight, acid-free cotton rag paper widely used for museum-quality archival printing, prized for its warm white surface and long-term colour stability — with a straight edge cut, signed and dated by the artist. Edition of 300, unnumbered.
