Description:

Moonwalker (2024) is a large-format square screenprint from Michael Kagan — the New York-based painter whose thickly impastoed, expressionistically rendered depictions of astronauts, athletes, fighter jets, and extreme human endeavour have made him one of the most distinctive and most collected figurative painters of his generation. The square format — 61 × 61 cm — gives the composition an immediacy and a formal authority that the standard landscape or portrait rectangle cannot achieve: the figure fills the frame without hierarchy, without background hierarchy, the image becoming almost iconic in its directness.

The Moonwalker subject sits at the intersection of Kagan's two great themes: the human body in extremis, and the technological sublime. An astronaut on the lunar surface — suited, helmeted, isolated in the absolute silence of a world without atmosphere — is simultaneously the most alone a human being can be and the most connected, the culmination of an entire civilisation's collective effort compressed into a single figure in a spacesuit. Kagan's painterly approach — translated here into the screenprint medium with its characteristic flat colour fields and graphic precision — preserves the essential tension of his studio practice: the heroic subject and the raw, gestural mark of its making.

The title Moonwalker operates on multiple registers: the literal (walking on the moon), the cultural (Michael Jackson's most famous dance move, itself a gesture of weightlessness and defiance of gravity), and the philosophical (the human compulsion to walk on surfaces we were never meant to reach). All three are present in Kagan's image, none foregrounded above the others.

Printed on Magnani Incisioni — a premium Italian cotton rag paper with a slightly textured surface, associated with the finest traditions of European intaglio and fine art printing — in an edition of 100, signed, dated, and numbered in pencil by the artist.
