Seaside Studio (1990) is a late and deeply personal work from Robert Motherwell — one of the founding figures of Abstract Expressionism and the movement's most articulate intellectual voice, whose Elegy to the Spanish Republic series constitutes one of the most sustained and emotionally powerful bodies of work in the history of twentieth-century American art. Produced in the final year of his life, Seaside Studio belongs to a body of prints in which Motherwell returned to the coastal setting of his studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts — the landscape that had shaped his sensibility since the 1940s and that pervades his most intimate graphic work.
