Description : Plate VI is the most atmospherically turbulent and emotionally charged image in the portfolio — a nocturnal dreamscape of swirling washes in amber, brown, blue and grey across which Wonderland’s creatures move with the urgency of a vision on the edge of waking. At the upper register, spiked black sun-burst forms erupt from warm brown washes like dark flowers or explosions; between them, a gold-trimmed masked or animal face peers outward with yellow eyes, flanked by tiny cypress trees on a distant ridge — a flash of Dalí’s native Catalan landscape transposed into Carroll’s England. At centre, a furred creature — the Cheshire Cat, barely materialised — dissolves into the atmospheric wash around it, its golden-edged form more suggestion than substance.
Below, a swirling eye rendered in fluid black calligraphic line dominates the middle register — the eye of the dream, the eye of the observer, the eye that Carroll’s narrative keeps turning back upon itself. Further below, a cloaked figure with a golden crown stands before a deep blue pool; at lower right, a golden caterpillar lies horizontal, the only grounded element in a composition entirely given over to dissolution and flux. The plate signature appears in the lower right within a crowned oval cartouche — Dalí’s most elaborate self-authentication in the portfolio, the crown and seal asserting authorial sovereignty over a world of beautiful instability.
