Description :

Plate VII is the most liquid and elemental image in the portfolio — a composition entirely given over to water, tears, and the sensation of drowning in one’s own emotion. The upper register is scattered with individual teardrop forms rendered in flat teal — precise, jewel-like, falling in a slow diagonal across the pale sky — before coalescing at upper right into a dense, turbulent mass of blue and purple wash from which a disembodied hand emerges, fingers splayed, reaching upward through the deluge. The entire middle ground swirls in luminous teal and green washes that move with the fluid, directional energy of a current — Carroll’s Pool of Tears made visible, the ocean of Alice’s own weeping that threatens to sweep her away.

At the lower register, two minimal calligraphic figures — rendered in pure black line with the economy of a Zen brushstroke — inhabit the pale ground beneath the flood: one a simple loop-headed creature with a rectangular body, the other a starburst explosion of radial lines. Their smallness against the vast aqueous field above them measures precisely the scale of Alice’s predicament — tiny figures in a world of her own making, unable to control the consequences of their own excess.

The palette — teal, aquamarine, pale yellow, the blue-black of deep water — is the most unified and the most tonally coherent in the series, the heliogravure process achieving the luminous, translucent quality of watercolour with particular beauty in this plate.
