Description :
Plate XIII is among the most chromatically radiant and compositionally dynamic images in the portfolio — a blazing fusion of amber, yellow, teal, and blue that brings together Carroll’s White Rabbit and the Looking-Glass world in a single image of extraordinary visual energy. A great blue and teal rabbit dominates the upper two-thirds of the composition, its ears striped in teal and gold dots, its body rendered in the luminous blue wash that the heliogravure process achieves with particular translucency — the animal simultaneously solid and atmospheric, present and dissolving. Against and within its body, a bare black tree grows in fluid calligraphic line, its branches extending into botanical arabesque. At lower centre, a tiny winged figure — Alice, perhaps, or a fairy — stands on an ornate golden chair or mushroom, holding a long wand or rod that extends diagonally across the composition with the authority of a conductor’s baton.
At upper right, a large praying mantis — rendered with the entomological precision that recurs across the portfolio’s insect vocabulary — perches with the stillness of a natural history specimen, its presence both observational and surreally charged: the mantis as witness, as predator, as the patient logic of the natural world watching the dream unfold. The lower register blazes in deep amber and orange — a ground of pure warm colour from which the composition rises — and the plate signature appears lower left within the crowned oval cartouche that Dalí uses for his most elaborately self-conscious self-annotations.
