Ominous Ripple is one of Shepard Fairey's most complex and politically charged compositions — a large-format horizontal screenprint that operates simultaneously as environmental manifesto, visual collage, and graphic tour de force. On the left, a face emerges from the surface of rippling water, eyes steady and unflinching — a figure of quiet resistance against a gathering threat. On the right, the composition fractures into layers of collaged imagery: oil industry propaganda, a blazing red sun, a lotus flower in amber and crimson, geometric OBEY patterns, a drilling platform silhouetted against a darkening sea, and fragments of news headlines — "Extent of oil spill unclear." The globe hangs in the upper right corner, gilded and precarious.
The work is Fairey at his most politically explicit — a direct indictment of the fossil fuel industry and its impact on the natural world, rendered in his signature palette of teal, red, amber, and cream with the layered graphic density of a constructivist poster. The title is deliberately ambiguous: the ripple is the one spreading outward from the submerged figure, but also the one spreading outward from every drilling platform, every spill, every extraction — consequences that widen silently until they can no longer be ignored.
