Description:
Mon Manège à Moi is a work of precise, dreamlike draftsmanship from Maye — a risograph print rendered entirely in shades of blue that transforms the classic fairground carousel into something altogether stranger and more charged. In place of painted horses, two figures ride dirt bikes suspended from the carousel's poles, orbiting endlessly beneath an ornate canopy rendered with the meticulous detail of a technical illustration. One rider slouches with the ease of someone entirely at home in the loop; the other reaches upward, arm extended, as if grasping for a ring that perpetually escapes.
The monochromatic blue palette — recalling Delft faience, technical blueprints, and the ink drawings of the old masters simultaneously — gives the image a quality of both nostalgia and precision, the familiar fairground structure estranged by the substitution of motorcycles for horses and elevated by the extraordinary density of the linework. The carousel is simultaneously a celebration of freedom and a closed circuit — you go around, and you come back, and you go around again. Whether that is joy or trap depends entirely on what you are riding and how fast.
The title — a reference to the classic French chanson Mon Manège à Moi — layers the image with a romantic and melancholic resonance that transforms the visual joke into something more genuinely felt. This is Maye at his most technically refined and thematically layered.
Produced as a risograph print on fine art paper in an edition of 400, each impression is signed and numbered lower right by the artist.
