Description

Grannies (2006) is one of Banksy's most beloved and enduringly funny prints — a work of perfect comic construction and genuine social wit. Two elderly women sit in matching armchairs on either side of a standard lamp, knitting with the serene concentration of a Sunday afternoon. The blankets growing in their laps read "PUNKS NOT DEAD" and "THUG FOR LIFE." The pink ground — domestic, cheerful, almost saccharine — makes the punchline land with maximum force.

The image operates on multiple levels simultaneously, as the best Banksy always does. On the surface it is a joke — the incongruity of subcultural slogans in the hands of grandmothers — but underneath it is something more generous and more interesting: a suggestion that the women knitting these blankets may have lived those slogans, that rebellion does not expire, that the punk and the thug and the grandmother are not mutually exclusive categories. The lamp, the side table, the framed photograph — the whole apparatus of domestic respectability — becomes not a contrast to the slogans but their context, the life that continued after the leather jacket was hung up. Or perhaps never was.

Produced as a screenprint in colours on vélin d'Arches — one of the finest papers used in fine art printmaking, associated with the highest standards of French print production — and published by Pictures on Walls (POW), Banksy's own London-based publishing imprint, in an edition of 500. The POW blindstamp is present. Grannies has appeared regularly at the major auction houses and consistently achieves strong results — it is among the most recognisable and sought-after images in Banksy's print catalogue.
