Description:

Labyrinth with Oranges (2026) is a new signed edition produced by Perrotin — Daniel Arsham's long-standing gallery — that distils the full range of his visual and conceptual preoccupations into a single, vertically composed image of extraordinary ambition. A classical female bust, cracked and eroded in Arsham's signature manner, opens inward to reveal an architectural labyrinth: staircases spiralling through the interior of the skull, arcaded corridors populated by tiny figures, the internal geography of a mind rendered as an ancient palace in a state of beautiful ruin. At the base of the composition, outside the image plane, two halved oranges sit in vivid chromatic contrast — the only colour in an otherwise monochromatic grey world, their presence as unexpected and as precisely chosen as a Magritte incongruity.

The composition synthesises multiple threads of Arsham's practice simultaneously: the eroded classical sculpture of his Fictional Archaeology series; the architectural obsession with staircases, thresholds, and interior space that recurs across his paintings and installations; the surrealist disruption of scale and context; and the still-life tradition — the oranges both grounding the image in the physical world and functioning as a chromatic and symbolic anchor whose meaning remains deliberately open. Time, memory, the interior life of objects, the archaeology of the mind — all present, all characteristic.
