Description: 

Spaghetti (1970) is a major large-format lithograph from James Rosenquist — one of the founding figures of American Pop Art and the artist who, more than any of his contemporaries, understood the psychological and compositional potential of the billboard. Before becoming an artist, Rosenquist spent years painting commercial billboards on the sides of New York buildings, developing an intuitive understanding of how fragmented, oversized imagery operates on the human eye and nervous system at close range. That experience never left his art: his canvases and prints consistently deploy cropping, scale disruption, and the collision of unrelated commercial images to produce effects of disorientation and desire that are simultaneously seductive and deeply unsettling.

Spaghetti brings this sensibility to one of the most familiar and most loaded of American consumer products — pasta, that Mediterranean staple fully absorbed into the iconography of American domestic abundance. In Rosenquist's hands, the subject becomes a vehicle for the same formal operations he applied to fighter jets, lipstick, and Ford automobiles: the everyday object enlarged, cropped, and juxtaposed until its familiarity becomes strange and its strangeness becomes beautiful.
