Description:

Batman, Robin and Batmobile (1989) is a major large-format screenprint from Mel Ramos — the Bay Area Pop artist whose career-long engagement with comic book superheroes, pin-up imagery, and American popular culture places him as one of the most significant and most underrated figures in the Pop Art generation. Ramos was among the very first artists to transpose comic book iconography directly into fine art painting — his superhero works of the early 1960s predating by years the Pop appropriations that would make Warhol and Lichtenstein household names, and establishing him as a foundational figure in the movement's engagement with mass culture.

Here, Batman and Robin run full-tilt toward the viewer against a blazing amber-orange ground, the Batmobile — rendered miniaturised, almost comic — following behind. The figures are painted with Ramos's characteristic blend of flat colour and simplified modelling: close enough to their comic book origins to carry the full charge of their iconographic recognition, but stylised enough to assert their status as art objects rather than illustration. The orange ground — warm, flat, absolute — gives the composition the visual authority of a poster and the formal clarity of a painting.

The work was printed by Accent Studios, Los Angeles — a respected West Coast specialist printer — and published by Robert Bane, Los Angeles, in an edition of 100. Each impression is signed and numbered by Ramos in the lower margin, and bears the printer's blindstamp and publisher's ink stamp. The provenance — from the collection of Michael H. Epstein and Scott E. Schwimer — is documented and clean.
