Untitled (from Women of Allah) (1994/2024) is a new limited edition print reworking one of the most iconic images from Shirin Neshat's landmark Women of Allah series — the body of work that introduced her to an international audience and established her as one of the most significant artists of her generation. A woman's hands are shown holding a firearm, the skin of her fingers and palms covered in dense Farsi calligraphy — poetry by Iranian women writers applied in flowing handwritten script, the text simultaneously adorning and inscribing the body, asserting identity through language on the surface of the skin.

Women of Allah (1993–1997) was created in the years following Neshat's return to Iran in 1990 after seventeen years in exile — a confrontation with a country and a culture transformed beyond recognition by the Islamic Revolution. The series uses the black-and-white photographic portrait, the chador, the gun, and the calligraphy to construct images that challenge Western assumptions about Muslim women while bearing witness to the complexity of women's lives in Iran and in diaspora. The gun, here, is not simply a weapon: it is a symbol of resistance, of agency, of the refusal of the passive role that both revolutionary ideology and Western orientalism assigned to the veiled woman.

This new edition reworks the original photograph with additional silkscreen layers of handwritten Farsi calligraphy — a process developed in close collaboration with the artist at Make-Ready, the London fine art print studio known for its work with leading contemporary artists. The matte varnish seal preserves the surface integrity of the archival pigment print while the silkscreen calligraphy layer adds a physical dimension — ink on surface, text on skin — that honours the material logic of the original works. Printed on Somerset Tub Sized Radiant White 410gsm — an exceptionally heavy, premium cotton rag paper — signed by the artist, individually numbered from an edition of 139, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
