Description :

Plate III shifts the palette entirely — the dark, saturated intensity of Plate II gives way to an airy, luminous white ground across which Dalí disperses his Wonderland creatures with the lightness of a fever dream half-remembered. Deep navy washes cascade from the upper register like waterfalls or shadows, their edges dissolving into the white paper in the liquid, atmospheric way that the heliogravure process achieves with particular beauty. Against this pale, open field, a constellation of creatures and objects floats with careful Dalínian precision: a green serpent at upper right, a vivid red and orange salamander-like creature at mid-right, a dark owl-faced urn on a teal pedestal at left, a mouse in delicate line at lower left, and in the lower register a sweeping black figure in dynamic motion. The plate signature — “Dalí” — appears in warm red lower right, a chromatic accent that rhymes with the salamander above.

The composition is the most spatially open and the most atmospherically delicate of the three plates so far — the white ground breathing around the scattered elements, the blue washes providing structure without density. Dalí here operates closest to the tradition of the watercolour and the wash drawing, the heliogravure medium capturing the transparency and the accidental beauty of liquid marks on paper with a fidelity that distinguishes it from all other print processes.
