Description:
Grey Figure (1957/2016) reproduces one of Giacometti's most haunting and most characteristic paintings — a standing figure, barely materialised, emerging from and dissolving back into a grey atmospheric ground that occupies the entire canvas. The figure at the centre of the composition is reduced to its essential minimum: a schematic head, a torso, arms barely indicated, legs that fade into the grey below, the whole rendered in the same grey paint that surrounds it, so that figure and ground are almost indistinguishable — the human form present only as a slightly denser zone of paint, a persistence of intention in a field of dissolution.
Giacometti's grey paintings — produced across the 1950s and into the 1960s — are among the most philosophically rigorous works in the history of figurative art. They represent his answer to the question of how a painter can honestly depict the human figure in a post-war world that has permanently destabilised confidence in the visible: not by rendering the body clearly and completely, but by showing it as it is actually experienced — at a distance, in uncertain light, always on the verge of disappearing. The figure is signed and dated lower right in the reproduction: "Alberto Giacometti 1957."
This edition was co-published by the Fondation Giacometti, Paris (ADAGP) and HENI Productions, London — the gold standard of posthumous Estate authorisation — ensuring that the reproduction meets the strictest standards of colour accuracy and archival quality. The giclée print is face-mounted to Diasec — a crystal-clear acrylic bonded directly to the print surface — and mounted on an aluminium composite panel, giving the work a museum-quality presentation that protects and elevates the image simultaneously. Numbered 478/500 with the publisher's stamp on the verso, sold with original packaging. Referenced as HENI Editions S2.
