Description
Created in 1986 as part of Warhol’s final major portfolio, Cowboys and Indians, Kachina Dolls reflects the artist’s fascination with American mythology and cultural symbolism. In this series, Warhol juxtaposed iconic figures of the American West with Native American imagery, exploring the narratives that shaped national identity.
The Kachina dolls — ceremonial figures rooted in Hopi spiritual tradition — are rendered in Warhol’s distinctive Pop vocabulary. Through bold color contrasts and crisp graphic execution, the sacred object is transformed into a contemporary icon, raising subtle questions about representation and the commodification of culture.
Printed on Lenox Museum Board, a support frequently used in Warhol’s late screenprints, the work demonstrates strong chromatic saturation and refined surface quality. The edition is limited to 250, aside from artist proofs, and was printed by master printer Rupert Jasen Smith.
Fully catalogued in the Warhol Print Catalogue Raisonné (cat. no. 381), Kachina Dolls is considered one of the key works from the Cowboys and Indians portfolio — Warhol’s final completed print series before his death in 1987.
