Description: Gold Marilyn Monroe is one of Andy Warhol’s most famous works, created in 1962 as a striking tribute to the Hollywood icon following her death. Based on a publicity photograph from the 1953 film Niagara, Warhol painted a single-color background and screen-printed Monroe’s portrait over it. The gold field of Gold Marilyn Monroe—unique among Warhol’s Marilyns—evokes the sacred aura of religious icons, giving the work a simultaneously glamorous and morbid resonance.
Through the repetition and mechanical process of screenprinting, Warhol deliberately distances Monroe from individuality, transforming her into a mass-produced symbol. The work encapsulates themes of fame, illusion, and transience, portraying Monroe as radiant yet fleeting, bold yet vulnerable — a modern icon surrounded by emptiness, like the final fade-out of a film.
