Description

Marilyn Monroe (Marilyn) II.25 (1967) — known among collectors as the "Green Marilyn" — is one of the ten large-format screenprints comprising Warhol's landmark 1967 portfolio, the first publication by Factory Additions and the first series in which Warhol subjected a single photographic source to ten entirely distinct chromatic transformations. This impression presents Monroe's face entirely in vivid green — face, background, and shadow zones unified in a single colour field — her hair blazing in yellow and red, her lips a declaration of electric pink against deep red. The effect is at once alien and iconic: the most recognisable face in the history of celebrity made entirely unnatural, the recognisability surviving and intensified by the chromatic impossibility of the palette.

The green colourway is among the most compositionally coherent of the ten — the unified green ground and face creating a tonal field that makes Monroe simultaneously more present and more abstract, the colour asserting itself as the subject rather than the vehicle. Warhol understood that Monroe's face had already ceased to belong to a woman in 1967 and had become a screen — a surface of projection — and the green palette makes that argument most explicitly: a face this colour belongs to no human being, and yet we know exactly whose face it is.
