Description

Barcode Leopard (2004) is one of Banksy’s most recognizable and symbolically charged screenprints, blending dark humor with incisive social commentary. The artwork depicts a leopard escaping from a wheeled cage that doubles as a barcode—an image that has become synonymous with the artist’s critique of consumerism, captivity, and commodification.

Printed in black ink, this edition was produced in two formats: 600 unsigned prints (bearing the red stamped signature) and 150 signed prints. This example belongs to the unsigned edition, identified by its red ink signature stamp and official numbering.

The composition masterfully juxtaposes a wild animal—symbolizing nature, freedom, and vitality—with a barcode “cage” representing the dehumanizing logic of mass consumption. As often with Banksy, the image carries layered interpretations: a protest against illegal wildlife trade, a critique of entertainment industries exploiting animals, and a metaphor for the way consumer society traps both nature and humans in standardized, mechanized systems.

A powerful and collectible work from Banksy’s early 2000s period, accompanied by its official Pest Control certificate, ensuring full authenticity.
