Description:
Yes You Could Have Also Made This, But You Didn't is CB Hoyo's most celebrated and conceptually precise work — a piece whose title is also its entire argument, and whose argument is also a joke, and whose joke is also a serious proposition about authorship, originality, and the nature of artistic value. The text, rendered in multicoloured marker on a sheet of ruled notebook paper in the rounded handwriting of a child or someone deliberately channelling one, reads: "YES YOU COULD HAVE ALSO MADE THIS. BUT YOU DIDN'T." Above it, in smaller pencil script, a repeated line — a frustrated annotation, half-visible, half-legible — adds a further layer of private feeling to the public declaration.
The work belongs to a long tradition of conceptual art that interrogates the relationship between idea and execution — from Duchamp's readymades to Warhol's commercial imagery to Martin Creed's lights going on and off — but Hoyo's version has something those precedents sometimes lack: genuine humour, and a warmth that disarms the theoretical conceit before it can become pompous. Yes, you could have made this. The notebook paper, the markers, the ruled lines — none of it is technically demanding. But you didn't. And there it is, framed, in a gallery, numbered 213 of 257, signed. The gap between the possible and the actual is where art lives.
Numbered 213/257 and signed by the artist lower right, this example was acquired directly from CB Hoyo and has been framed with museum glass since purchase — preserving the work in excellent condition and presenting it as the artist intended.
king it a significant acquisition for collectors of cutting-edge contemporary art.
