Description:

Beautiful Hours Spin Painting (2009) is a large-format offset lithograph from one of Damien Hirst's most viscerally compelling bodies of work — the spin paintings, initiated in the early 1990s and continued across multiple series, in which paint is applied to a rotating canvas and flung outward by centrifugal force into explosive radial compositions. Here, the spin painting format is fused with Hirst's other defining motif — the skull — the skeletal form emerging from and dissolving back into a storm of magenta, yellow, teal, red, orange, and cobalt: time literally written on the face of death, clock faces visible within the maelstrom of colour.

The composition achieves something genuinely rare: a work about mortality that is also about joy, about colour, about the sheer exuberance of paint in motion. The skull — Hirst's most persistent memento mori, from the spot paintings to For the Love of God — is here not contemplated but overwhelmed, saturated, almost celebrated out of existence by the chromatic energy surrounding it. The clock faces embedded in the composition — the "Beautiful Hours" of the title — introduce time as the third term: between life, death, and the spinning present moment, paint moves outward at speed and leaves this behind.

Published by Other Criteria, London — the publishing house founded by Hirst himself and responsible for his most significant print editions — and printed in colours as an offset lithograph on wove paper, with the full sheet printed to the edges, creating a composition with no margin and no separation between image and object. Signed by the artist in black felt-tip pen.
