Ann in the Studio (1984) is a tender, technically assured etching from one of the most celebrated periods of David Hockney's printmaking career, when his line became increasingly confident, economical, and expressive of his relationships with his subjects.

The subject is Ann Upton — a close friend and frequent model — depicted in a casual interior setting, her curly hair and animated expression rendered with a light, responsive line drawn from looking rather than formula. The angular geometric background, suggesting a studio of chairs, walls, and architectural fragments, offsets the organic quality of the figure.

The intaglio etching process gives the line a warmth and physicality lithography or screenprint can't replicate, while the large 78.4 × 106 cm format brings the figure near life-size, making the encounter with the viewer immediate.

Signed and dated in the lower right margin, from an edition of 61. Hockney's prints are held in the permanent collections of the Tate, MoMA, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among others.

That same domestic intimacy appears differently in Pretty Tulips (1970), a color lithograph from an edition of 200 depicting red tulips with luminous precision. A digital-era counterpart can be found in Double Portrait (2011), a rare iPad drawing printed in an edition of just 25 — both available now at Lynart Gallery.
