Description:

Self-Portrait, Reflection (2002) is one of the most celebrated self-portraits from Lucian Freud's mature period — painted at the age of seventy, during a stretch of extraordinary creative intensity in which the artist was known to work into the small hours of the night well into his late seventies. The painting exemplifies what Freud called "maximum observation": an unsparing, psychologically penetrating gaze turned on the artist's own face, rendered with his signature dappled skin tones, meticulous attention to light, and the accumulated weight of a lifetime's looking. Nothing is softened, nothing is idealised — and the result is one of the most commanding self-portraits in the history of Western art.

This limited edition archival pigment print, produced on 310gsm Hahnemühle German Etching paper — one of the most prized supports in fine art printmaking, prized for its texture, weight, and archival stability — faithfully translates the luminous quality and psychological intensity of Freud's original oil. The surface of the Hahnemühle German Etching paper, with its subtle tooth, echoes the textured materiality of the painted canvas, lending the print a physicality rare in photographic reproduction.

Self-Portrait, Reflection is one of four limited editions published by the Lucian Freud Archive celebrating the artist's portraiture from 1953 to 2002. Each impression is authenticated with a bespoke debossed Lucian Freud Archive stamp in the lower right corner and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity — the gold standard of Estate authorisation. With an edition of just 48, this is among the most exclusive prints ever released bearing Freud's name.
