Description:
Created in 1971, this original etching by Pablo Picasso is a vibrant homage to Edgar Degas, renowned for his intimate scenes and depictions of women. Titled Degas en jaquette, se dessinant lui-même, en habit, chez les filles, the print reflects Picasso’s fascination with his artistic peers while asserting his own free, sensual, and expressive style.
The scene depicts Degas in formal attire, sketchbook in hand, observing a group of nude women in what appears to be a bordello or imaginary studio. Picasso’s swift, almost nervous line captures the raw energy of the moment. The figures are stylized, deformed, and fragmented, showcasing the artist’s unique visual language. The composition embodies Picasso’s playful, tender, and voyeuristic gaze on art, creation, and femininity.
This work is numbered 41/50 in the lower left and bears Picasso’s signature stamp in the lower right, as per the official posthumous edition under the control of the artist’s estate.
