Description:

The Painter and His Model (1964) is a colour lithograph published by the Cercle d'Art, Paris and printed by the Mourlot studio — the legendary Parisian printing house whose collaboration with Picasso across four decades produced the most technically accomplished lithographic work associated with his name. This publication belongs to the tradition of the Mourlot/Cercle d'Art partnership that made significant Picasso compositions available in colour lithographic form to a broad collecting audience while maintaining the technical standards of the finest French print publishing.

The subject — the painter in the presence of his model — is among the most enduring and most autobiographically charged themes in Picasso's late career. From the late 1950s through the 1960s and into the 1970s, the relationship between the artist and his subject became the explicit subject of his work: the act of painting itself, the power relations and the intimacy of the studio encounter, the gap between the living model and the painted image, were explored across hundreds of paintings, drawings, and prints that constitute one of the most sustained meditations on artistic creation in the history of Western art. The Painter and His Model engages directly with this tradition — Picasso at over eighty, still interrogating the fundamental question of what it means to look and to paint.

The colour lithograph on vellum — signed and dated on the plate — was published by Cercle d'Art in 1964, the same year the composition was created, giving this publication a contemporaneity with its source that the posthumous editions cannot claim. Printed by Mourlot with the technical authority that distinguishes his studio's output from purely commercial lithographic reproduction. Excellent condition.

FAQ

Is this an original Picasso print?
This is an authorised colour lithograph published by Cercle d'Art, Paris in 1964 and printed by the Mourlot studio — plate-signed and dated. It is not a hand-signed original from a formal print edition, but an officially published, Mourlot-printed colour lithograph issued during Picasso's lifetime.

What makes this publication significant?
It was published in 1964 — during Picasso's lifetime and in the same year as the composition — by the Cercle d'Art in collaboration with the Mourlot studio, giving it both contemporaneity and technical authority that posthumous publications cannot claim.

What is the significance of The Painter and His Model as a subject?
From the late 1950s onward, the painter-and-model relationship became the central explicit subject of Picasso's late work — a sustained interrogation of the act of artistic creation, the studio encounter, and the gap between the living figure and the painted image. It is among the most important thematic threads of his final three decades.

What is the Mourlot studio?
The most celebrated lithographic printing house in French art history — the studio that printed original lithographs for Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Chagall, and Miró. A Mourlot-printed publication carries exceptional technical and historical authority.

What condition is the work in?
Excellent condition.
