Description:

Seaside Studio (1990) is a late and deeply personal work from Robert Motherwell — one of the founding figures of Abstract Expressionism and the movement's most articulate intellectual voice, whose Elegy to the Spanish Republic series constitutes one of the most sustained and emotionally powerful bodies of work in the history of twentieth-century American art. Produced in the final year of his life, Seaside Studio belongs to a body of prints in which Motherwell returned to the coastal setting of his studio in Provincetown, Massachusetts — the landscape that had shaped his sensibility since the 1940s and that pervades his most intimate graphic work.

The aquatint and etching combination — colour laid in through the tonal richness of aquatint, structure articulated through the precision of the etched line — is ideally suited to Motherwell's visual language: gestural but considered, immediate but deeply informed by the history of European modernism he absorbed so thoroughly during his early years. The Whatman paper — one of the finest English handmade papers, associated with the highest traditions of watercolour and intaglio printing — gives the work a surface quality and a luminosity that complement the chromatic delicacy of the colour aquatint layers.

Co-published by the artist himself and Waddington Graphics, London — one of the most prestigious print publishers and galleries in the British market, whose blindstamps appear on the sheet — and printed in the United States, this impression is numbered 3/32 from an edition of just 32, plus 7 artist's proofs. It is referenced as E. & B. 495 in the authoritative catalogue raisonné of Motherwell's prints. Signed with initials in pencil — Motherwell's standard signing practice for his print editions. Presented framed.
