Description :

Plate II from Dalí’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland portfolio plunges the viewer into the most chaotic and chromatic scene of the series so far — a swirling vortex of Wonderland’s most anarchic inhabitants rendered with the full expressive force of Dalí’s surrealist vocabulary. A white rabbit leaps across the left half of the composition in fluid, almost dissolving line; a blue and yellow lizard-like creature writhes at the centre; a golden masked figure blazes at the right, flanked by playing card fleurs-de-lis. Blue lamp-shades hover at mid-ground like displaced domestic objects, and at the base of the composition a luminous orange cup — rendered in the flat, saturated colour that punctuates the otherwise dark and gestural image — sits in its blue saucer with the grounded authority of an anchor in a storm.

The composition is Dalí at his most painterly and most unleashed: the controlled elegance of Plate I gives way here to a density of mark-making — dark washes, splattered ink, calligraphic line — that mirrors Carroll’s own escalating narrative chaos. The colour palette — navy, amber, orange, yellow, fleur-de-lis black — achieves a visual intensity that the heliogravure process translates with extraordinary fidelity, the tonal range of the dark ground making the chromatic accents burn with particular force.
