Description :

Plate IX returns to the open, luminous palette of the portfolio’s most elegant compositions — a warm white ground across which Dalí orchestrates a dialogue between two presences, two flowers, and two registers of visual reality. At centre, a golden-amber female figure — Alice rendered in Dalí’s warm intaglio wash, her body nude and fluid, her dress dissolving into blue and gold streams that flow downward — reaches toward a small crimson flower at the end of a horizontal black line, the gesture of offering or receiving suspended in the moment before contact. Below, occupying its own separate visual register, a vivid red poppy emerges from a burst of black radiating lines — a flower that is simultaneously botanical and explosive, its petals precisely observed, its surrounding halo of marks transforming it into something closer to a sun or a wound than a garden flower.

At the upper left, a tiny calligraphic figure — loop-headed, in motion — and a distant reclining form inhabit the horizon line, maintaining Dalí’s characteristic practice of populating the periphery of his compositions with minimal, almost shorthand presences that suggest narrative without defining it. The plate signature appears lower centre in the warm ochre of the ground itself — barely distinguishable from the paper, a signature that is almost an absence.

The composition is among the most formally resolved and emotionally tender in the series — the figure’s reaching gesture, the flower’s receptive stillness, the blue and gold of the flowing dress creating a visual warmth that balances the explosive energy of the poppy below.
