Description:
Howdy Doody (1981) is part of Andy Warhol’s renowned Myths portfolio, a series of ten works portraying iconic figures from 20th-century popular culture. Warhol uses the comically exaggerated features of the character Howdy Doody—originally from a popular children’s television program aired between 1947 and 1960—to highlight the intersection of entertainment, consumer culture, and myth-making.
The boy’s oversized mouth, nose, and cheeks become commercial icons within the composition, while his bandana, checkered shirt, and gloves in vivid primary colors stand out against the dark gray background. His raised arm and wide-eyed expression reference his role as a puppet in The Howdy Doody Show, a program that earned him iconic status.
To amplify the three-dimensional effect, Warhol incorporated diamond dust into the surface of the screenprint, adding both texture and luminosity. Created in 1981 and printed on Lenox Museum Board, this work was produced in an edition of 200, hand-signed by the artist, and published by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts, Inc. in New York. It remains a significant piece from the Myths portfolio, catalogued in the artist’s raisonné.
