Description
Created in 1981 as part of the iconic Myths Portfolio, Santa Claus exemplifies Andy Warhol’s fascination with cultural archetypes and mass-media mythology. In this celebrated series, Warhol portrayed universally recognized figures — from Superman to Mickey Mouse — transforming them into luminous Pop icons.
In Santa Claus, the traditional holiday figure becomes both nostalgic symbol and commercial emblem. Warhol heightens the theatricality of the image through bold coloration and expressive line work, elevating a familiar character into the realm of high art.
This work is further enhanced with diamond dust, a material Warhol frequently used in his later prints to create a shimmering, glamorous surface. The sparkling texture adds depth and spectacle, reinforcing the interplay between kitsch, celebrity, and consumer fantasy that defines the Myths series.
Printed on Lenox Museum Board and executed by master printer Rupert Jasen Smith, the edition is limited to 200, aside from proofs. Fully catalogued in the Warhol Print Catalogue Raisonné (cat. no. 226), Santa Claus remains one of the most sought-after images from the Myths portfolio.
