Description:

Made in Heaven is one of the most provocative and debated collaborative works in contemporary art — a photograph produced at the intersection of Jeff Koons's conceptual practice and Annie Leibovitz's celebrated photographic eye. The work belongs to the body of imagery generated around Koons's landmark Made in Heaven series (1989–1991), which he conceived as a total artwork encompassing paintings, sculptures, and photographs, and which was first exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 1990.

The series represented Koons's most radical engagement with the themes of desire, spectacle, and the commodification of intimacy — situating the body within the same visual economy as his balloon dogs and vacuum cleaners, and demanding that the viewer confront their own assumptions about taste, transgression, and the boundaries of fine art. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz — one of the defining portrait photographers of the twentieth century, known for her work with Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone — the images carry the technical authority and compositional refinement that distinguish Leibovitz's studio practice from purely commercial photography.

Produced as a vintage gelatin silver print in an edition of 25 — an exceptionally small number — and signed, this work represents a rare intersection of two of the most significant names in American contemporary culture. Koons's auction record stands at $91.1 million; Leibovitz's photographs are held in major institutional collections worldwide.
